Woman Of Fortune

Andrew was born in his home town in the western part of Nigeria. In those days, parents consulted fortune tellers who could foretell the future of the unborn child. Andrew’s parents went to consult one to know the
future of unborn Andrew who was still in his mother’s womb. The future teller said he will be a boy and will be a replica of his father. This happened as he said when Andrew was born. He looked exactly like his father. The fortune teller also added that Andrew will very poor and will later be made rich by a woman whom God will send for him. The predictions of the fortune teller had always happened so people believed in them.
Andrew grew up and went to a community primary school. In his basic five, he had a young pretty class girl, Mary who was so fond of him. They were just too little and innocent to understand love although they felt it. On many occasions, they were addressed as ‘little couples’ by teachers in their school.
Time came when the family decided to move ahead in life. Andrew’s father was hired to be a personal driver to Chief Dele who lived in Lagos Island with his family. Chief Dele gave them his two bedroom boy’s quarters in his duplex to live in. By this time, Andrew had already completed his primary education. He was deceived by his parents that they were going to Lagos to spend a long holiday. This was the only way they could convince him to go with them because he loved his town and didn’t want to leave. He missed all his friends especial Mary who was his favourite. Chief Dele enrolled Andrew into a junior secondary school in Lagos Island. Life became better for Andrew and he slowly forgot his old friends including Mary.
Andrew was very brilliant and emerged the best student in his junior secondary school. He met Lizzy who was his classmate. They were best of friends and shared things together. Later Andrew formed a study group of five boys and one girl, Lizzy. His study group produced the best students in his level. Among the boys was Kunle who became the senior prefect in his final year in High school while Lizzy was his assistant. The criteria for giving this post were based on intelligence and character. The post of the senior prefect would have been given to Andrew but he changed school after completing three years in junior secondary school. He needed a new school with a higher standard where he will meet more intelligent student who could be better than him.
Andrew moved on to a new school outside Lagos where he became a border. He lost touch with his formal study group because his new school was far from Lagos. He came to Lagos once a year to spend Christmas with his family and traveled back to resume study in the first week of the New Year. Andrew met tougher students who had learnt and developed far beyond him academically. He studied diligently to make up his lapses. All through his senior secondary school he never emerged the best because the whole students worked and fought hard to maintain good positions. Andrew sat for his high secondary school certificate examination and made all distinction alongside six other students in his school. Andrew passed his matriculation examination and gained admission to study Economics in University Of Nigeria Enugu Campus.
During his first registration, he met Lizzy. They were shocked to see each other unexpectedly over four years. Both of them had already grown and changed in appearance. They took time complimenting each other and talked about their past achievements from when they saw last. Lizzy was admitted to study Law in the same institution. They were happy been together again after a long time. They fell in love and spent much time together after lecture hours. Andrew and Lizzy were sound academically. They were respected by students in their respective classes. Andrew was greatly distracted by girls who came to him for academic assistance.
By now, Andrew and Lizzy were both seventeen years old and had never had sex before. Andrew needed it but was scared while Lizzy felt ashamed to give herself to a man even though she needed it too. They thought it was destined for them to be together and Lizzy saw no need why Andrew could not wait till marriage before they start having sex.
Susan was Andrew’s favourite classmate. She was fond of sleeping in Andrew’s room during the semester examination in the mist of his three other roommates. She discovered Andrew’s weak points and kept seducing Andrew whenever they were left alone in the room. One night the oppurtunity came and the made love. It was like a miracle to Andrew and he enjoyed every bit of it while Susan felt indifferent because Andrew was inexperienced. After this, Andrew had more confidence and guts before women. People began to notice changes in him from the way he walked, talked and behaved. He became less serious and began to hangout with more girls. He had many sex mates which he didn’t love but kept them just to satisfy his sexual needs.
Lizzy admired his new attitute because Andrew became lifelier and played romantically with her each time they were together. She never knew Andrew was sleeping around because she never caught him. There relationship grew stronger. Initially, Andrew could mix academics with pleasure and still could concentrate on his studies. He finished his first year with a grade point of 3.6 which was not good enough for his person. Lizzy did far better. She made 4.4 which is close to a first class grade point. Andrew began to skip lecture to spend more time with his female friends. He missed many tests that were conducted by lecturers without notice in order to punish students that were absent. Some of these tests carried up to thirty marks and were high credit unit courses. This meant that if a student missed any, he or she was bound to fail or do badly in that course. This was the beginning of Andrews down fall.
Finally, Andrew graduated from the university with a third class while Lizzy made a second class upper. Lizzy got a job in a law chamber in Lagos immediately after she was called to bar and planned to save money to do her masters degree in England. Andrew’s parents, with the help of Chief Dele had managed to train him out of the University expecting him to emerge successful and look after his younger siblings. Chief Dele and many other people were disappointed. Lizzy encouraged him to go for a post graduate diploma course and then move on to obtain his masters degree. His parent kept consoling him that one day his blessings will come. They told him about the prediction of the fortune teller for the first time. It was said before his birth that he will fall and later raised by a woman. Andrew thought if the predictions were true then that woman was Lizzy. Things went so bad that Andrew could hardly get money to cut his hairs. Lizzy gave him money to run around Lagos to search for jobs. It wasn’t easy because many employers in Nigeria needed mostly young people with first class and second class upper degrees. Lizzy also helped to circulate Andrew’s CVs to people she felt could link him up. Two years past and still Andrew was jobless.
Things worked as Lizzy planned and she travelled out to do her masters degree program in England. She met Femi, a young Nigerian in his middle thirties. Femi studied Engineering in University Of Lagos and worked for six years in Lagos before going to England to obtain a masters degree in business management. Femi finished and got a good job in England. Lizzy still loved Andrew and sent him money once in a while. Years past by and Andrew could not get any job. This made him decide to see the fortune teller to know if there could be solutions to his problems.
It had been close to twenty years Andrew left his home town with his parents to live in Lagos. Andrew and his father travelled to see the fortune teller. The man was about ninety years of age and could not remember Andrew’s father. He had grey hairs all over and was still strong and able to walk without any aid. He stretched Andrew’s palm and looked at it. Then he told them that Andrew was blessed. He went on to say that the woman will soon come. Andrew asked him if this woman was called Lizzy and he replied that souls do not bear names and can not be described to mere humans. He added that he could identify the woman if he sees her. “Destinies can never change”, he added, and advised Andrew to keep struggling and work harder to live a normal life like every other human.
Few weeks later, Lizzy and Femi visited Nigeria for holidays. This was an opportunity for the two couples to meet their parents who were both residing in Lagos. Lizzy told Andrew that Femi proposed to marry her months ago but she had not given him positive reply. It was difficult for Lizzy to choose whom to marry. Her parents knew Andrew right from their days in the university. They liked him and accepted him as a member of their family. Likewise was Lizzy to Andrew’s parents. Lizzy was more compatible with Andrew than Femi. The only thing that made Femi outstood was his status. He became a partner in a financial firm in England and had lots of property in Nigeria, United States and In England. He was highly connected. He prospered in everything he did and so had a great future which everyone could see.
Two nights before Lizzy’s departure to England, she took Andrew to a resort where they spent hours playing and dancing in the open garden. They discussed a lot that has happened within the few years they were apart. This night was a special one for them. Later they moved down to Eko Hotels where they checked into a suit for the night. From the room, you could see the waves of Atlantic Ocean and feel the awesome breeze it blew across. Lizzy had long wished for a night like this in which she would be in the arms of the man she truly loved all through the night and taste the sweetness of love making. Andrew knew her sensitive part and began to touch them. He stripped her naked and lay her on the bed. Lizzy’s temperature rose as Andrew sucked her from her succulent thigh to her firm breast. He slowly penetrated and thrust in and out till she reached orgasm. It was after the whole love making that Andrew discovered That Lizzy had lost her Virginity to someone else. Lizzy cried and explained how it happened. She lost it to Femi after long persuasion. Ever since, she felt guilty each time Femi made love to her. Andrew felt bad and blamed himself for his inability to take responsibilities.
Two days later, Lizzy and Femi travelled back to England. Andrew had high hopes and waited patiently for her. Lizzy had given him much money to take care of himself and buy a small car while she will take her time to workout his post graduate diploma program in England. Things got better. Andrew and his parents concluded that Lizzy was that woman of furtune. Two months later, Lizzy called that she had accepted to marry Femi explaining that Femi became inpatient and needed to marry and settle down. Lizzy was scared of losing out so she accepted. This was not easy for Andrew to bear. He saw his entire life collapsing. Lizzy got married to Femi later that year. She kept in touch with Andrew and began to process his admission. From time to time, Lizzy sent Andrew money which was enough for him to live comfortably in Lagos. Sincerely, all these meant nothing to Andrew because his relationship with Lizzy was his main source of joy.
This led Andrew into drinking and smoking just to ease the pain. One night, he went clubbing in Victoria Island where he saw a beautiful lady, Mary in her late twenties sitting in the mist of two friends. She looked familiar but Andrew could not figure out where he had known her. Andrew greatly admired her looks and gesture and could not take his eyes off her. All this while, the ladies did not notice Andrew who was sitting far end opposite them with bottles of beer on his table. Andrew stood up and staggered to the ladies’ table holding a bottle of beer in his right hand and a stick of cigarette in his mouth. He asked the lady to dance with him. They broke into laughter and told him he was drunk. Andrew sat and beginning to talk nonsense. He told them that he came to club to forget his sorrows. He went ahead to say drinks were better than women because the more bottle one takes, the more satisfaction he get whereas the more women a man has, the closer he is to his grave. He paused, drank his beer for a while and said “now I have got more satisfaction”. The girls laughed and he continued, “You look like Mary, my childhood classmate. She was an angel and you look just like her. We were best of friends. Sometimes I wondered where she could be and if I would ever see her again. Well since you do not want to dance, I am leaving”. The ladies were puzzled when Andrew mentioned Mary. Andrew added as he stood up to leave. “Are you Mary or not, please don’t waste my time” He tried to walk away and collapsed on the floor.
The entire house gathered around. Mary asked the men to help her carry him to her car. She drove Andrew to a hospital for treatment. She and her friends waited in the reception till he recovered consciousness at the dawn of the day. Andrew was surprised to see the ladies with him in the hospital. He called her by her name, Mary and she answered cheerfully. Andrew introduced himself but Mary could not remember because it had been about twenty years they met last. She was convinced because Andrew said lots of things he could remember about her. Things worked out fine and soon Mary and Andrew fell in love. Marry narrated her experience with men to Andrew. She never had successful relationships. Few weeks earlier, a man of God prophesied to her that her husband is someone she had known from when she was a little girl. She could not figure out who the person could be because she had lots of friends as she was growing up. Could this be Andrew’s expected source of fortune?
Mary’s father was a senator whiles her mother a minister. She was the only daughter and the last child in the family of three children. She studied in United States of America were she obtained a master’s degree in Law. She just returned to Nigeria and planed to set up a law chamber in Victoria Island Lagos. Her brothers studied abroad too and returned to Nigeria to manage their father’s real estate business. Mary introduced Andrew to her family and they adopted him into business. They linked him up to politician and top men in government. Politicians and top men in government were the calibre of people that influenced many things in the country. They had the power to transform their poor relatives and friends into billionaires within a twinkle of an eye blink. This was the prayer of every Nigerian to get connected to this sort of people.
Within one year, Andrew made much money. He bought a house in Lekki and moved in with Mary. He told Mary about the fortune teller and she accepted to see him. They travelled down to their home town to see the old man. The man held their right hands and looked at their palms for a while. They were scared not to hear a negative prediction. What they were expecting to hear was that they were they perfect couple. Suddenly the man smiled and said to Andrew, “Your fortune has come. She is the one. Make her your wife because you were meant to be together”. Mary gave the old man money and promised to come back in a month time to renovate his house which was in bad shape.
Mary wedded Andrew in a big way. The marriage was televised on the national news and made the headlines of many news papers and magazines. Many dignitaries attended from all part of the world. Lizzy attended with her husband, Femi. She was amazed by the sudden fortune that smiled on Andrew in just less than two years after she left him. Anyway, she didn’t regret marrying Femi because he was a good, loving, caring and faithful husband. Lizzy rejoiced with Andrew to have found someone that loved him just like she did. Mary got pregnant shortly after the marriage. They were inpatient and needed to start having children.
Andrew and Lizzy went back to the fortune teller when Mary was eight months pregnant to predict the future of the unborn child. Immediately they came in, the old man rose on his feet and saluted the child in the womb. Immediately, Lizzy felt the child moving inside her. The old man began to dance and sing, “A king is coming”. We went on to predict that the boy will be a replica of his father. He will never see poverty and will grow to become the president of Nigeria.
